Why does your teen need to lift weights...

Ooookay parents, strap in for this one: your teen NEEDS to lift weights (athlete or not). For those athletic teens out there- weight training doesn’t mean we’re going to turn you’re daughter or son into a bulky bodybuilder (misconception number 1). Weight lifting has limitless benefits for athletes in ANY sport. Just because your child lifts weights doesn’t mean they’re going to gain 20lbs of muscle. Strength and muscle are 2 very different things…

INJURY PREVENTION! Injuries in sports are just very simply a risk your athlete will have to take (trust us…we’ve had our fair share). However, with proper weight training your child’s muscles and tendons will be strong enough to withstand a large percent of those high risk scenarios. If you were in a car accident- would you want to be in a tin can or a steel cage? Your teens injuries can be vastly limited or avoided completely with a weight lifting foundation…

MISCONCEPTION NUMBER 2: It will stunt their growth and slow them down. (Yawn). This has been disproven a very long time ago through numerous studies and we’ve gone over this 50 times so I’m not going to go too far into it. We started weight lifting at a very young age (about 12 years old)- grew to our full potential and it definitely didn’t “slow us down”. With the right coaching and programming…weight lifting will make your athlete stronger, faster, quicker and more agile.

Is your kid not an athlete? Even better! We’ve had LOTS of teens work with us who were never into team sports for whatever reason and fell in love with weight training! It is a great way to gain confidence, stay in shape and discipline your life. The best thing about fitness is it’s a huge competition with yourself and no one else…if your teen doesn’t like sports have them try weight lifting (with a good coach)- you’d be surprised at how they transform!
